Nepal's former national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane was on  Dec 29  convicted by a court of raping a minor.

In January, Nepal court released Lamichhane who was arrested after a 17-year-old girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August last year.

Lamichhane, 23, is Nepal's most high-profile cricketer, and the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2018.

In a significant move, the Bhajan Lal government in Rajasthan has announced a meticulous review of all decisions made by the previous Ashok Gehlot government over the last six months. This implies that approximately 800 decisions will undergo scrutiny and are temporarily on hold.

Rajeev Kumar named Bengal police chief

The West Bengal government on Dec 27  appointed former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP). Kumar, known for his close proximity with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the Saradha chit fund scam case before it was handed over to the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

After designating the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir, led by separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat, as an ‘unlawful association’ under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasised that anyone acting against the unity, sovereignty, and integrity of the nation will face the consequences of the law and will not go unpunished.

The Union Cabinet on Dec 27  approved the construction of a new 4. 56 km long, 6-lane bridge on the river Ganga, connecting Digha and Sonepur in Bihar.

The total cost for the project is estimated at Rs 3,064. 45 crore, including Rs 2,233. 81 crore for civil construction.

The Union Cabinet on Dec 27  gave its approval for widening of the 135-km stretch of Khowai-Harina road in Tripura.

The project involves an investment of Rs 2,486. 78 crore which includes a loan component of Rs 1,511. 70 crore (JPY 23,129 million.

The loan assistance will be from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under Official Development Assistance (ODA) scheme

Wolfgang Schaeuble, one of the most important figures in German politics and an icon of budgetary rigour in the eurozone, has died aged 81, the German parliament said .

Schaeuble, who was a minister under chancellors Helmut Kohl and Angela Merkel and also played a key role in German reunification in 1990.

Born in Freiburg in 1942, Schaeuble was the longest-serving member of the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, where he had sat since 1972.

Students in Indonesia's Aceh province rallied on Dec 27  demanding the government drive away Rohingya refugees arriving by boat in growing numbers as police named more suspects of human trafficking.

Over 1,500 Rohingya, who fled violent attacks in Myanmar and now are leaving camps in neighbouring Bangladesh in search of better lives, have arrived in Aceh off the tip of Sumatra since November. They have faced some hostility from fellow Muslims in Aceh.

About 200 students protested in front of the provincial parliament in Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, to call on lawmakers to reject Rohingya refugees, saying their presence would bring social and economic upheaval in the community.
