Prime Minister Narendra Modi on condoled the loss of lives in the earthquake in Turkey, and said India is ready to offer all possible assistance to help it cope with this tragedy.

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southeast Turkey and Syria early Feb 6 .

At least 195 people were killed in both countries, hundreds were injured and the toll was expected to rise.

The Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court has in an interim order restrained the police from conducting mock drills depicting persons of a particular community as terrorists.

It was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by social activist Sayed Usama alleging that mock drills being conducted by police department depicted attire and slogans to indicate the terrorists were Muslims.

Mock drills are conducted by the police at district levels in order to increase efficiency of the security force and to be better prepared for emergencies, including terror attacks.

As part of ongoing efforts of to make train journeys ‘homely’, the Indian Railways has introduced an AI-enabled food ordering facility based on the WhatsApp platform. A WhatsApp Business number will share a message to the customers booking e-ticketing for opting in e-catering services with the railways’ e-catering website, IRCTC.

With this, passengers can book meals and restaurants of their choice through IRCTC without even requiring downloading the app. Customers can also avoid third-party food ordering apps.

In future, the Railways will implement WhatsApp two-way communication system in the facility with services of chatbot integrated.

Indian-American schoolgirl Natasha Perianayagam was named in the "world's brightest" students list for the second consecutive year by the US-based Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth, based on the results of above-grade-level tests of over 15,000 students across 76 countries.

Perianayagam, 13, is a student at Florence M Gaudineer Middle School, in New Jersey.

She also took the Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth (CTY) test in Spring 2021, when she was a Grade 5 student.

Her results in the verbal and quantitative sections levelled with the 90th percentile of advanced Grade 8 performance, which catapulted her into the honours list that year.

This year, she was honoured for her exceptional performance on the SAT, ACT, School and College Ability Test, or similar assessment taken as part of the CTY Talent Search.

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria early on Feb 6, toppling buildings and killing at least 568 people. With hundreds injured, the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched the rubble in cities and towns across the area.

On both sides of the border, residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside on a cold, rainy and snowy winter night, as buildings were flattened and strong aftershocks continued.

On the Syrian side of the border, the quake smashed opposition-held regions that are packed with some 4 million people displaced from other parts of Syria by the country’s long civil war. Many of them live in decrepit conditions with little health care. Rescue workers said hospitals in the area were packed.

Six months after being stabbed, British author Salman Rushdie published his new novel "Victory City", an "epic tale" of a 14th-century woman who defies a patriarchal world to rule a city.

Written before the US knife attack that nearly took the Indian-born author's life, the novel purports to be a translation of a historical epic originally written in Sanskrit.

The much-anticipated work tells the tale of young orphan girl Pampa Kampana who is endowed by a goddess with magical powers and founds the city, in modern-day India, of Bisnaga, which translates as Victory City.

Rushdie, 75, will not promote his 15th novel due to his physical condition, although his agent Andrew Wylie told The Guardian that his "recovery is progressing".

Born in Mumbai in 1947, Rushdie published his first novel "Grimus" in 1975 and gained worldwide fame six years later with "Midnight's Children" which won him the Booker Prize in the UK.
